چکیده

E xpanding population, limited access to freshwater, and continued growth in the manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries increase the potential for exposure to a plethora of compounds through air, food, and water. Advances in analytical technology enable the scientific community to observe and quantify chemical contaminants in air and water at miniscule levels (parts per trillion and lower). Such technological advances have allowed researchers to detect trace levels of organic contaminants around the world in matrixes ranging from food to air to dust to water, yet the consequences of exposure to mixtures of these pollutants at low levels from multiple sources is still not fully understood. The scientific community has been concerned about endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and pharmaceuticals potentially entering drinking water supplies since at least 1965 when Harvard University researchers discovered that natural and synthetic estrogens are not completely eliminated by wastewater treatment (Stumm-Zollinger & Fair, 1965). As early as 1972, the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) discovered pharmaceuticals in wastewater effluent (Garrison et al, 1975). After these pioneering efforts, only sparse attention was paid to hormones and pharmaceuticals in the environBENJAMIN D. STANFORD,

Exposure assessment of the radon in residential tap water in Kastamonu

Background: It is considered that if radon gas is inhaled and ingested, it is the primary health risks for lung and stomach cancers. This paper presents the measurement results of radon activity concentrations both residential tap water and dam water for Kastamonu city Centre-Turkey. Materials and Methods: The radon activity concentrations of water samples collected from 60 tap waters at four l...

Removal of estrogens and estrogenicity through drinking water treatment.

Estrogenic compounds have been shown to be present in surface waters, leading to concerns over their possible presence in finished drinking waters. In this work, two in vitro human cell line bioassays for estrogenicity were used to evaluate the removal of estrogens through conventional drinking water treatment using a natural water. Bench-scale studies utilizing chlorine, alum coagulation, ferr...

Assessment of source water contamination by estrogenic disrupting compounds in China.

Detection of estrogenic disrupting compounds (EDCs) in drinking waters around China has led to rising concerns about health risks associated with these compounds. There is, however, a paucity of studies on the occurrence and identification of the main compounds responsible for this pollution in the source waters. To fill this void, we screened estrogenic activities of 23 source water samples fr...

Analysis of estrogenic activity in coastal surface waters of the Baltic Sea using the yeast estrogen screen.

In the present study, the yeast estrogen screen (YES) has been used to assess the estrogenic activity in surface waters of a coastal region in the German Baltic Sea. Solid-phase extraction using the copolymer Oasis HLB followed by a clean-up on silica was carried out on approximately 50-l water samples. From the final 400 microl extract volume, 100 microl aliquots were used for the measurement ...

Endocrine-disrupting compounds: a review of their challenge to sustainable and safe water supply and water reuse.

The relevance of endocrine-disrupting compounds as potential contaminants of drinking water is reviewed, particularly in the reuse of wastewater. Growing populations and increasing intensification of land and water use for industry and agriculture have increased the need to reclaim wastewater for reuse, including to supplement the drinking water supply. The variety of anthropogenic chemicals th...
